Lent at St. Martin's...
Lent is a 40-day season of reflection and preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus. By the 4th century, lent was an established time of intensified training in discipleship in the church, first for new people to the faith, then later a practice everyone in the church was encouraged to undertake. Among the different ways to deepen our practice of faith during lent is to engage in prayer and study with renewed discipline. This year we are reading together Phyllis Tickle's book The Great Emergence, where she describes a 500-year cycle of change in society and in the Christian church. This past week we considered the nature of these transformations and the century of emergence that we have just lived through in the 20th century. On Tuesday, March 23 at 7:30pm at the Office we will discuss the third section of the book on where it all may be going. Please join us! Another option for Lenten study is Teresa of Avila's masterwork about prayer, The Interior Castle. Teresa of Avila is a well-known 16th century Spanish nun and mystic who helped renew spirituality in her time and place while she also sought church reform in the tumultuous time of Protestant Reformation. People continue to seek her spiritual wisdom and guide to prayer. Our reflections with her continue on Monday, March 8 and March 22 at 7:30 pm at the Office.

Stephen Ministry Training - In early January, ten enthusiastic trainees began the 50 hours of training for people who have committed themselves to learning the skills of caring ministry. The group is comprised of five members from St. Martin's Anglican Church, four members from the Lutheran Church of the Cross and one member from St. Peter's Anglican Church. They have begun the task of studying, discussing, experiencing and trying out the skills involved in sharing God's love and compassion with those who especially need these gifts. Let us thank God for these ministers and ask his continued help and blessing in their adventure.
Growing in Faith is a life-long process marked by rituals such as baptism and "first" communion. A Special Way to Give Thanks - Every Sunday various people in the congregation choose to give the flowers at the altar to beautify our worship and which become gifts given to visitors or to those who are shut-in or in hospital. The 2010 "Flower Calendar" is now posted on the Greeters' Table where you can sign up for a Sunday. Flowers are sometimes given in thanksgiving for blessings received and sometimes in memory of particular loved ones. The cost of the flowers is $40 and cheques made out to St. Martin's also need to identify that it is for altar flowers. Many thanks.
