Loving your neighbour as you love yourself: Responding to H1N1

In an effort to protect everyone's health against the spread of H1N1 and in accordance with Diocesan policy, please remember we no longer practice intinction (dipping bread into the chalice). If you are concerned about receiving from the common cup, please be assured that communion in one kind (bread only), is an acceptable tradition in the Anglican Church. You may wish to touch the base of the chalice, or otherwise acknowledge it, as the words of administration are said. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Christine.

On Saturday Jan 23, 2010 Tim Visser, the architect from Woods Parker will be meeting with various ministry group leaders to review the space each group anticipates needing into the future.  This is part of background data needed by Tim to prepare conceptual drawings for the building.  These details will be added to the general comments the congregation confirmed earlier this year.  Individuals from the congregation are invited to come and meet Tim and share ideas for the future building over a pot-luck lunch that day from 11:30-1:00 pm.  We will be meeting at Knox in the hall for lunch.  If you cannot make this time but would like to share some ideas, please email them to the church office or to Mollie Cole at mollie.cole@shaw.ca   thanks.  Mollie.

Our Annual General Meeting is coming on Sunday, February 7 and we are seeking new vestry members. For more information and to express your interest, please contact Laurie McIntosh (403-242-0047)

Living the Questions

People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer the human race.  At the same time, many have a sense that they are alone in being a "thinking" Christian and that "salvaging" Christianity is a hopeless task. What is needed is a safe environment where people have permission to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic.

Living the Questions is a DVD and web-based small group study exploring beyond the traditions and rote theologies in which so many people and local churches seem to be stuck.  Ideal for Christian invitation, initiation and spiritual formation, Living the Questions will help seekers and "church alumni/ae" alike in discovering the significance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like in today's world.

Stephen Ministry Training Begins: This past week, on Tuesday, January 5th, ten enthusiastic trainees began the 50 hours of training for people who have committed themselves to learning the skills of caring ministry. The group is comprised of five members from St. Martin’s Anglican Church, four members from the Lutheran Church of the Cross and one member from St. Peter’s. They have begun the task of studying, discussing, experiencing and trying out the skills involved in sharing God’s love and compassion with those who especially need these gifts. Let us thank God for these ministers and ask his continued help and blessing in their adventure.

Growing in Faith is a life-long process marked by rituals such as baptism and 'first' communion. Early in 2010 we will offer an opportunity for families (with school age children) to deepen their Christian life, leading to baptism or a renewed commitment to Holy Communion, if desired. Please contact Christine in the office with your interest and for further information.

2010 Anglican Church Calendars are back!  A few will be available at the 8:30 and 10 am services.  All profits go to the Youth Group Mission Trip.

Icross Dolls - We have been blessed with an abundance of yarn for knitting Icross dolls!  Anyone interested in trying this quick knit can click here for the doll pattern or for more information contact Marge Munro 403-242-4240.

Coffee Time – St. Martin’s has a wonderful tradition of gathering after the service for the chance to socialize and connect with our parish.  The “coffee ministry” is a great opportunity to meet new people in the congregation as well as provide a much needed service.  We are in need of a few more people to help out on the occasional Sunday.  For more information please call Audrey Martin at 269-7841.

KAIROS Calgary is preparing a day that will be of interest to many. This will take the form of a public, constructive dialogue on the environmental, economic and ethical issues concerning oil production and the Alberta oil sands. This February 6th, 2010 public debate will feature, among others, Andrew Nikiforuk (a widely published author and sought after speaker on the issue) and Don Thompson (The Oil Sands Developers Group) who will present the concerns of both sides, in the hope of generating a wider public dialogue. The aim of such a consensus-seeking approach is to find mutually satisfying solutions to issues that threaten our health and the health of our children, on the one hand, and the financial and economic well-being of our society, on the other. The aim is to discover a truth that we can all live by, addressing existing problems in mutual respect and understanding.   The venue is Our Lady of Grace church, 1714 - 14 Avenue N.E., Calgary, from 9.00 to 4.30. Lunch will be included. For more enquiries or to register please go to  www.kairos-calgary.ca  or email pwrdfcalgary@telus.net  or contact Alison Longson. Telephone 403 243 5478

GETTING MARTHA OUT OF THE KITCHEN – Starting on January 20th at 7 pm, Dr. Anne Moore from the Religious Studies Department at the University of Calgary will be leading 4 challenging and fun sessions in the Cormack Hall.  Please contact Richard or Helen for more information.  Her four talks will explore recent discoveries on the role of women in the early church.  Dr. Moore writes:

For several decades, feminist theologians and historians have ‘clawed’ their way through the centuries of ‘male-orientated’ scholarship and interpretation in an effort to recover the stories of women within the early church.  This scholarship has focused on a few of the  female figures found in the New Testament such as Mary Magdalene (recently known through Dan Brown’s the Da Vinci Code), the limited roles associated with celibacy such as virgins and nuns, or women’s activities within the domestic realm of the house churches.  However, a recent shift in scholarship has ‘let the cat out of the bag.’ There were many more women associated with the evolution of Christianity such as Martha, Salome, Egeria, Maximilla, Drusianna, Proba and others. Further, these women were patrons, pilgrims, prophetesses, scholars, writers, presbyters, deacons and biblical interpreters. And, in terms of women’s activities within the house churches, those activities seldom included the kitchen or organizing the bake sale. If Martha of the New Testament is an example, the women were mission organizers and evangelists; they women were in the pulpit, by the altar and in the classroom. Over the next few evenings, we will explore these new discoveries.
