KAIROS Calgary is preparing a day that will be of interest to many. This will take the form of a public, constructive dialogue on the environmental, economic and ethical issues concerning oil production and the Alberta oil sands. This February 6th, 2010 public debate will feature, among others, Andrew Nikiforuk (a widely published author and sought after speaker on the issue) and Don Thompson (The Oil Sands Developers Group) who will present the concerns of both sides, in the hope of generating a wider public dialogue. The aim of such a consensus-seeking approach is to find mutually satisfying solutions to issues that threaten our health and the health of our children, on the one hand, and the financial and economic well-being of our society, on the other. The aim is to discover a truth that we can all live by, addressing existing problems in mutual respect and understanding. The venue is Our Lady of Grace church, 1714 - 14 Avenue N.E., Calgary, from 9.00 to 4.30. Lunch will be included. For more enquiries or to register please go to www.kairos-calgary.ca or email pwrdfcalgary@telus.net or contact Alison Longson. Telephone 403 243 5478

GETTING MARTHA OUT OF THE KITCHEN – Starting on January 20th at 7 pm, Dr. Anne Moore from the Religious Studies Department at the University of Calgary will be leading 4 challenging and fun sessions in the Cormack Hall. Please contact Richard or Helen for more information. Her four talks will explore recent discoveries on the role of women in the early church. Dr. Moore writes:
For several decades, feminist theologians and historians have ‘clawed’ their way through the centuries of ‘male-orientated’ scholarship and interpretation in an effort to recover the stories of women within the early church. This scholarship has focused on a few of the female figures found in the New Testament such as Mary Magdalene (recently known through Dan Brown’s the Da Vinci Code), the limited roles associated with celibacy such as virgins and nuns, or women’s activities within the domestic realm of the house churches. However, a recent shift in scholarship has ‘let the cat out of the bag.’ There were many more women associated with the evolution of Christianity such as Martha, Salome, Egeria, Maximilla, Drusianna, Proba and others. Further, these women were patrons, pilgrims, prophetesses, scholars, writers, presbyters, deacons and biblical interpreters. And, in terms of women’s activities within the house churches, those activities seldom included the kitchen or organizing the bake sale. If Martha of the New Testament is an example, the women were mission organizers and evangelists; they women were in the pulpit, by the altar and in the classroom. Over the next few evenings, we will explore these new discoveries.
