St. Martin's Anglican Church, Calgary

Children

Welcome to St. Martin's Sunday School!

We're committed to providing an experience that your children will enjoy, while learning about God and worshipping with us.

When do the children go to their classes?

Check the Sunday School easel at the front entrance for directions and also for information regarding age groups, classrooms and today's teachers. Most Sundays the children accompany their parents into the service for a short children's talk with one of the clergy.  On some Sundays they may go directly to the classrooms.

On Sundays when there is a children's talk, the children may make an offering by contributing to the globe which is passed around after the children's talk in church. The children's offering goes to their chosen charity, "One World Child Development Centre", a preschool program for underprivileged children in Calgary's downtown core. The children will go to their individual classes after the children's talk. You are welcome to accompany your child to his/her classroom to meet the teacher.

There are three school age groups and a nursery:

The senior group: grades 4-6 (ages 9-11)

The intermediate group: grades 1-3 (ages 6-8)

The beginner group: preschool - kindergarten (ages 3-5)

The nursery is available to care for children under age three.(Paisley Newburn - coordinator)

Where are the classes?

The beginner group meets in the first classroom in the hallway on the left.  The intermediate group meets in the first classroom on the right, directly across from the beginner class. The seniors are in the larger gym.

During the service the children will come back to join their parents during the offertory hymn so that they can accompany their family and receive communion together.

What will my child learn in her/his class?

The children's program at St. Martin's includes prayer, singing, reading from the Bible and interactive activities based on a curriculum call Seasons of the Spirit - a lectionary-based, ecumenical resource created by an internation team of writier and editors whose vision is to provide "resources that empower all ages to be transformed in Christ as they:

  • explore meaning and mystery in the Bible;
  • celebrate in worship, sacraments, education, and service;
  • engage in ministries of love, justice, and witness;
  • and live in inclusive communities of faith, shaped and led by the Holy Spirit."

Music

Danielle Wahl will be leading the children in music twice a month during part of the children's Sunday school time. Together they will learn new songs for worship, celebration and praise.

Who teaches Sunday School?

St. Martin's Sunday School is run completely by volunteers. Presently we have 3 coordinators responsible for organizing the curriculum for each of the three groups and one coordinator for scheduling teachers. To make the children's ministry possible, parents are asked to volunteer to teach some Sundays throughout the year. The lessons and all materials are prepared by the coordinators.
