There are many ways to get involved in the St. Martin's community! Listed below are descriptions of some of St. Martin's Lay Ministries along with the contact information of those who oversee each ministry.

Sides Team

The Sides Team is an integral part of hosting people into our place of worship and assisting them through the service each Sunday morning.

2 people serve together each Sunday.

Duties

Before the service

  • Hand out service materials

During the service

  • Collect Offering
  • Ushering during Eucharist

Following the service

  • Take down and put away (banners, altar, etc) in storage

Time Commitment

  • Once / 6 weeks
  • ½ hour before service (to prepare materials)
  • ½ hour after service (for takedown)

An easy way to get to know people in the parish community a little better…..

A ministry mostly carried out by men during these transitional years due to the heavier work of take-down. Open to all to help for a while . . .

Sunday Hospitality

The Sunday morning 10 am service wouldn’t be the same without time for fellowship & refreshments afterwards: something all ages enjoy.  

2 people helping out each Sunday. 

Duties

Before Service

  • bring baked item & cream to serve
  • prepare tea, coffee & juice
  • set up table area

Near end of the service

  • bring in coffee, etc.

Following the Service

  • monitor supplies
  • clean up tables
  • wash dishes, etc.

Time Commitment

  • 1-2 times / 6months
  • arrive 9:10 am for preparation
  • stay after coffee hour to clean up

Nursery

The Nursery is a childcare ministry where our children begin their relationship with Christ.  Between 3 – 8 youngsters, up to the age of 2 ½ , are cared for weekly.

2 volunteers scheduled each Sunday: women, men & teens are welcome.
(Teens are always with an adult)

Duties

Before Service

  • get toy cart and set out toys
  • move desks in room

During Service

  • watch children
  • give snacks
  • parents come to retrieve children for Eucharist

Following the Service

  • a few minutes to tidy up and put toys back in cupboard

Time Commitment

  • once every 6-8 weeks
  • arrive 15 min. before service
  • return to service for Eucharist
  • few minutes afterwards to clean up

Worship

Each Sunday morning, our worship is enhanced through the many people involved serving during the service and the Eucharist. 

Bread Makers

Several people are dedicated to baking a loaf of bread for the Eucharist and bringing it to church on a given Sunday.

Chalice Serving

Serving the chalice to the community during Eucharist is a great privilege. The clergy can assist with training and directions are mailed in advance.

Readers

One person reads 2 scripture readings each Sunday. The designated readings are sent out ahead of time along with ah schedule. Readers are asked to prepare by practicing the passages beforehand focusing on tone, pitch and expression.

Sunday School

Serving children ages 3 - Grade 6 with classes take place during the 10 am service, with children returning to the service for Eucharist.  Curriculum: “Seasons of the Spirit”

Class Groups

Beginners: age 3 yrs – Kindergarten
Intermediate: Grades 1-3
Senior: Grades 4-6

Volunteers of all ages welcome!

Teachers

Prepare a lesson, with guidance from a class supervisor.  Curriculum & supplies are provided for each class.

Time Commitment: 1 / month or 3-4 Sundays in a block.

Classroom Assistants

An extra pair of hands to help with crafts or assisting students looking up scripture.

Newsletter Preparation

Preparing Sunday School newsletter 2-4 times/yr. Time Commitment: minimal  (can be done electronically and from home)

Music

Leading the children for 5 –10 minutes singing simple Christian songs.  Helping prepare and teach songs for the annual Christmas Pageant. 

Skills required:  singing voice, (instrument optional)

Time Commitment: 1/month (more often leading up to Xmas Pageant)

Senior Supervisor

Compiling supplies for the Senior class lesson each Sunday, copying curriculum, gathering items and organizing events / get-togethers 3-4 times/yr. 

Time Commitment:1-2 hrs/ week (more in August preparing for return in September)

Learn about what is involved in teaching by “shadowing” a teacher for a class or two.

Passing on the faith to another generation.

Altar Guild

This is a quiet ministry.  We prepare the Altar for Eucharist each Sunday at the Chapel and Academy. 

2 members are on duty each Sunday.

Duties

Saturday – pick up flowers at florist.  Prepare Altar for Sunday early service @ Chapel.

Sunday @ Academy

Before Service

  • arrive early to set the Altar and Credence Table
  • set out vessels in preparation for Eucharist

After Service

  • wash up Altar vessels and return them to the cart.
  • silver cleaning as may be required.
  • go to chapel to wash up.
  • take home linens to launder and return them for next week.

Time Commitment

  • approx. once/2 months
  • arrive by 9:15 am to begin set up
  • stay after service to tidy up Academy & Chapel
  • attend guild meetings (4x/yr)
  • assist with special occasions

A great way to get involved in the life of the church. New members are always welcome.

Prayer Circle

The ministry of the Prayer Circle is one which underpins the entire membership of St. Martin’s.  It is a privilege to share in this ministry on behalf of the community.

Our mission is to uphold the community in general: the ministries to which we have been called and also individual needs which are shared with us.

All intentions are held in the strictest of confidence. Each member is committed to journeying together, learning from each other, growing in our faith walk, and deepening our prayer life.

Time Commitment

  • meet monthly
  • pray daily, individually
  • host prayer vigils twice a year to support the life of the parish

Counters

This ministry happens behind the scenes each Sunday during and directly following the 10 am service. It is a simple but important ministry.

2 people are always on duty together to ensure shared responsibility and accuracy.

One experienced person is always paired with someone new.

Duties
After taking Eucharist
Take offerings to a separate room. Then staying to count the offerings and record them in a ledger. One person will be responsible for depositing the offerings in the bank afterwards.

Time Commitment

  • once/6 weeks
  • during the latter part of the service and into coffee hour

A quiet Sunday morning ministry.  We are always in need of willing people to sit and give this time. . .

Greeters

A welcoming ministry: the first contact newcomers/visitors have with our parish. Each week before the 10 am service, 2 greeters are at the entrance as people arrive.

Duties

Before the Service

Welcome those arriving, with a smile, handshake, and directions: especially visitors. Guide new families/children/youth.

Be familiar with any pamphlets and information at the entry table.

After the Service

Introduce any newcomers to the clergy, if possible. Also, try to spend time with them at coffee hour.

Time Commitment

  • once/6 weeks
  • arrive by 9:40 am to be prepared: 20 minutes before the service

Pastoral Care Team

A mid week ministry offered by a small group of people dedicated to keeping contact with the parishioners of St. Martin’s community who need extra support at various times. We desire to be a visiting presence to our community representing a great presence.

Reaching Out Through

  • Short home visits
  • Driving people to church
  • Making phone calls
  • Special services and tea at Christmas and Easter
  • Meeting with the team and clergy for updates and planning

Time Commitment

The time commitment is as much as seems necessary in a flexible manner.

A mystic from the 16th century Teresa of Avila once wrote “Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet but yours”.

Meal Ministry

This ministry offers support to individuals and families who are experiencing various changes or loss in their lives. Meals are provided as needed for a short period of time.

The coordinator is made aware of a family in need and proceeds to contact them regarding possible support. If agreed upon, a schedule is set up and organized.

Commitment

  • Be on call to prepare a meal as the need arises in the parish
  • Prepare food, usually a supper, that can be delivered ready to serve on a particular night or to be frozen for use later
  • Deliver the meal at an arranged time

Time Commitment

  • 1-3 times/year
