St. Martin's youth group provides sandwiches for Exit on a 5th Sunday of the month. Exit Community Outreach, located at 625 6th Ave. SE, is a service for street kids aged 12 to 24 years. Exit offers refuge for a few hours and provides the kids with soup and a sandwich, a shower, clothing, laundry facilities, medical and dental referrals and some counseling. Wentworth Manor and Signal PointSt. Martin's provides spiritual care to residents of Wentworth Manor and the Signal Point Residence. The first Wednesday of every month 6 to 8 parishioners assist our rector Richard LeSueur in providing a communion service for the residents. The volunteers set up the altar and help the residents to and from the service. These volunteers also provide food and assistance at bake sales, luncheons and teas and accompany residents on bus trips. Once a week, parishioners also volunteer in the gift shop at the Royal Park Centre and also provide donations and time for bake sales and teas. At Signal Pointe Centre, St. Martin's offers a communion service once a month. This dedicated group of volunteers is always looking for others to join them in their ministry. Call St. Martin's office at (403) 249-3014 for further information. Icross Canada has sent over five tons of medical supplies over the past four years to developing countries. Many of these shipments originally were made of glass (vials, tubes etc.). Comfort dolls have been knit in many parishes to protect this fragile cargo. The dolls are then given out to local children by the doctors and nurses working in these countries. St. Martin's has participated in knitting comfort dolls with the help of Marge Munro. If you are interested in knitting dolls (click here for the pattern), have yarn to donate or would like to donate an old bicycle (in working condition) contact the church office 249-3014.
The CIFB has an ever-expanding demand for its services to feed the poor. Members of St Martins, in concert with members of St. Barnabas, help out at the CIFB Friday mornings. Separately, groups of St. Martins parishioners visit on other days during the week as and when the CIFB needs workers to fill in. Besides giving back to our community, participants learn the finer points of sorting soup cans and unboxing cereal and gives us all food for thought.
