Spirituality

What is Spirituality?

There's a story told of Francis of Assisi and his companion Brother Masseo who were passing through a town in France. It was the end of a long day and they were begging for food. Francis was on one street and Brother Masseo on another.

Francis, being quite gaunt and pale, received just a few scraps of dry bread, whereas Brother Masseo, who was tall and handsome, received large portions of fresh bread.

When they met outside the town later that evening to share the alms they had been given, Brother Masseo said how he longed for a nice table on which to eat their bread and for a roof over their heads. But Francis could only exclaim joyfully, "We are not worthy of this vast treasure! For we have bread, a table of stone, clear water and God over us and with us."

Spirituality, it has been said, is the ability to value the little things in life; to cultivate the ability to see the connection between ordinary reality and extraordinary grace. As one person said, "To reclaim the world as the house of God."

Moses was told to "remove the sandals from his feet, for the place where he stood was holy ground." (Exodus 3:5) Moses might have wondered, "Where did the holy ground begin? All the sand looks the same!" The point is, all places are sacred because all places are potential places of encounter with the living God.

'Remove your sandals' is a spirituality for daily living. It's the invitation to see and embrace all life as sacred encounter and all encounters as sacred.

The blessing, strength and love of the Risen Lord be with you.
