Vision Statement

An Oasis

St. Martin's has said it does not want to build a stand-alone church; a church that stands separate from the wider needs of the community, stands alone for only one group, or stands empty during the week except for Sunday worship and church-related activities. We have sought to discover the ways by which we can become fully engaged in the life of the wider community. In spite of various test scenarios the vision remains intact. What has changed is the form.

Consider the tent. For a number of years St. Martin's was known as "A Church without Walls" and our newsletter was called "Under the Tent" because we raised a tent-like structure every Sunday to hallow a place for worship at the Calgary Academy. The tent is a biblical concept derived from the Exodus experience where the people of Israel pitched a "tent of meeting" in the wilderness as a place for God to dwell and to be known, encountered and worshipped. The tent that St. Martin's "pitched" Sunday by Sunday was taken down for Homecoming, September 2009, as a sign that we are entering into a new stage of our spiritual journey. We are being transformed into a "Church on the Move" as we discern how to create an "Oasis in the City" on our land on 17th Ave. SW. Building plans are under consideration. These designs incorporate the openness and flexibility that we enjoyed during our desert experience. This Oasis will be a place where all are welcomed and received with joy. In the meantime St. Martin's community offers solace and shade from the exhaustion of contemporary life, sacred food and holy drink. You are welcome in this place where faith inspires a grace-filled life and the experience of the Holy lifts the soul.
