Worship & Music

Worship is the central act of the Christian community. It reminds us of who we are, it opens the soul to experience of the Holy once again, deepens faith, challenges our thinking about our lives and choices, reconnects one to the community of faith, gives the means of forgiveness and reconciliation with our deepest selves and our primary relationships, renews a companionship with Jesus as we launch into a week ahead, and nourishes the hear in the strength and peace of the Risen Lord. Sunday worship provides balance between the sacred story and the sacred meal - both reading and reflection on Scripture and the sharing of Holy Communion are part of the weekly pattern - nourished in Word and Sacrament.

Music Links

There is an ease about St. Martin's Sunday experience that is accommodating and warm in terms of ease of movement during worship, dress, the inclusion and valuing of children, and the manner of the service which has been described as "dignified informality." Worship follows the patterns and rites of the Anglican Christian tradition that dates a 1000 years and more.

Music

Our music ministry is often mentioned as a reason people come to St. Martin's on a Sunday morning. It is a key strength of our parish life. Selections include both contemporary music, traditional hymns, and selections from the classical music vocal and instrumental repertoire. The music team, largely a volunteer group, including both adult and youth members, is led by a paid director. The group also has a lead soprano (Jonquil Koddo) who provides vocal leadership, as well as a solo singing capacity. Members offer their gifts of singing and playing a variety of instruments (keyboard, guitar, mandolin, banjo, trumpet, percussion, drumming (djembe) and pipes/recorders).

Focus is on congregational type music, where all parishioners can easily join in during the service. Our repertoire is eclectic, featuring world music from various cultures and countries (African, South American, Celtic, etc), contemporary pieces, traditional hymns, Taizé music, original music conceived for our Parish (see info on Ariana Rodriguez), as well as various influences and types of music such as country, gospel and bluegrass. Differing styles are blended seamlessly (i.e.: the use of traditional selections, played with more modern/world instruments; contemporary Christian music is arranged in four part harmony, and is played with elaborated instrumental accompaniment). The choir also provides anthems on regular bases, and the solo lead soprano enhances any given service with her virtuoso and embellished singing.

There are currently between 6-15 members of the music group on any given Sunday. The choir functions as a four part harmony vocal ensemble. This group leads the congregation during the 10 am Sunday Service. They rehearse on Thursday evenings each week. It is an open group, always welcoming new members to join as either regular, part-time or seasonal participants. Anyone wishing to join can contact our music director: Ariana Rodriguez at arianarod@shaw.ca
