23rd Psalm  (versions provided by Carol Hayes)

King James’ Version

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

New Revised Standard Version

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
   He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
   he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
   for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
   I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
   your rod and your staff—
   they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
   in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
   my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
   all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
   my whole life long.

International Standard Version

The LORD is the one who is shepherding me; I lack nothing.

He causes me to lie down in pastures of green grass; he guides me beside quiet waters.

He revives my life; he leads me in pathways that are righteous for the sake of his name.

Even when I walk through a valley of deep darkness, I will not be afraid because you are with me. Your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me, even in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Truly, goodness and gracious love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will remain in the LORD’s Temple forever.

The North American Plains Indian Version

The Great Father above is a shepherd Chief.

I am his and with Him I want not.

He throws out to me a rope and the name of the rope is love and

He draws me to where the grass is green and the water not dangerous,

And I eat and lie down and am satisfied.

Sometimes my heart is very weak and falls down but

He lifts me up again and draws me into a good road.

His name is WONDERFUL.

Sometimes, it may be very soon, it may be a long, long time,

He will draw me into a valley.

It is dark there, but I’ll be afraid not, for it is in between those mountains that the Shepherd Christ will meet me and the hunger that I have in my heart all through this life will be satisfied.

He gives me a staff to lean upon.

He spreads a table before me with all kinds of foods.

He puts His hand upon my head and all the “tired” is gone.

My cup He fills till it runs over.

What I tell us true.  I lie not.

These roads that are “away ahead” will stay with me through this life and after; and afterwards I will go to live in the great house and sit down with the Shepherd Chief for ever.

The Bible in Rhyme

The Lord is my shepherd, and I want for naught.

He leads me beside quiet waters in thought.

He leads me in ways in which my soul’s restored.

He shows me the righteous way.  He is my Lord.

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

And I fear no evil, as God’s in each breath.

The St. Joseph Edition of the New American Bible (1992)

The Lord is my shepherd;

There is nothing I lack.

In green pastures you let me gaze;

To safe waters you lead me.

You guide me along the right path

For the sake of your name.

Even when I walk through a dark valley,

I feel no harm for you are at my side;

Your rod and staff give me courage.

You set a table before me as my enemies watch;

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Only goodness and love will pursue me all the days of my life;

I will dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.

Japanese Version

The Lord is my pace setter, I shall not rush.

He makes me stop and rest for quiet intervals.

He provides me with images of stillness, which restore my serenity.

He leads me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind, and his guidance is peace.

Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for his presence is here.

His timelessness, His all-importance, will keep me in balance.

He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity, by anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility.

My cup of joyous energy overflows; surely harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours.

For I shall walk in the pace of my Lord and dwell in His house forever.

The Message

God, my shepherd!  I don’t need a thing.

You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from.

True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction.

Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side.

Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure.

You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies.

You revive my dropping head; my cup brims with blessing.

Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.

I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life.

The Good News Bible Version

The Lord is my shepherd;

I have everything I need.

He lets me rest in fields of green grass,

And leads me to the quiet pools of fresh water.

He gives me new strength.

He guides me in the right paths,

As he has promised.

Even if I go through the deepest darkness,

I will not be afraid, Lord,

For you are with me.

Your shepherd’s rod and staff protect me.

You prepare a banquet for me,

Where all my enemies can see me.

You welcome me s an honoured guest,

And fill my cup to the brim.

I know that your goodness and love

Will be with me all my life;

And your house will be my

Home as long as I live.

Comfort

I am a child of God.

I have everything I need.

This beautiful earth feeds my body.

You feed my soul.

You guide me in the ways of Life,

For you are Life.

And though I walk through dark places, and eventually to death,

I need never be afraid.

For You are with me always,

In You I can find comfort.

With Your help, I can face whatever comes.

My joy overflows.

Your goodness and blessing will be with me

Every day of my life—and forever.

The 23rd G’day (an all Aussie version)

The Lord is my jackaroo,

I never have to scum off any sheila.

He lets me take a smoko down in the lush, green paddocks.

He takes me to the billabong with no crocs and no mozzies.

He patches up the sole of my blunnies.

He points me in bonza directions and He takes the cred.

Even though I go on walkabout through the Never Never with a good chance of carking it,

I will fear no Tassie devils for You are true blue;

Your stock whip and Your barbie-mate comfort me.

You put a sausage sizzle for me in the sight of the mob of mongrels and bludgers.

You douse my noggin with emu oil.

 My tinny overflows.

I reckon mateship and a fair go will mark every day of my life,

And I will bunk down in Your holy homestead for yonks and yonks and yonks
